ENFit is a new style of connection for tube feeding supplies that has been adopted worldwide to increase patient safety by reducing misconnections and accidental disconnections. As we move away from non-ENFit connections, also known as “legacy”, Coram®* will work to change your tube feeding supplies to ENFit. Here are some commonly asked questions to help you with this change.
How does ENFit work?
ENFit connects by twisting together rather than pushing in to connect, and only fits with other ENFit tube feeding supplies. See how ENFit works.
When will my supplies be changing?
Feeding bags will no longer be made with the white connector that allowed for a connection to legacy style tubes. When possible, Coram will provide you with ENFit feeding tubes and supplies so that you can connect to the feeding bags directly without the need for a connector.
If you have a legacy style feeding tube that cannot be changed to ENFit, two white connectors will be sent separately each month to use with your feeding bags and syringes. Lightly twist the white connector onto the end of your feeding bag or syringe to connect to your tube as you normally would.
When it’s time to change your bag or syringe, untwist the white connector, rinse under warm water, and lightly twist onto the new feeding bag or syringe. Do not twist too tight or it can become stuck.
The white connectors are made with medical grade plastic and can be safely rinsed and reused. If you need additional connectors, you can buy these online from medical supply companies.
Do I need to have my tube changed?
If you have a low-profile (“button”) tube, ENFit extensions will be provided with your next refill and will connect to your existing tube. If Coram provides your feeding tube, an ENFit tube will be provided with your next replacement. If Coram does not provide your tube, ask your doctor for an ENFit tube the next time you have your tube changed.
How will I give medications?
If your pharmacy has been providing your medication syringes, talk to them about your need for ENFit syringes. If you have been buying medication syringes over the counter, you will want to purchase ENFit style syringes. Additional supplies to help in administering medications (such as ENFit medication straws or ENFit medication bottle adapters) can be purchased online from medical supply companies.
Where can I find additional information?
