Coram's Tranplant University is a series of webinar continuing education programs focused on pre- and post-transplant patient care management. All calls last approximately 60 minutes, and the speakers will be available for any questions immediately following the completion of each call.

CE credits*, 1 credit hour per webinar, for RNs will be provided upon attendance and completion of evaluations at the end of the presentations. Handouts and evaluations will be available at the time of the presentation.

Overview of Immunology
Presented by guest speaker Lecia Snell, MSN, RN, CCTN, Clinical Nurse Specialist, The Nebraska Medical Center, Omaha, NE

This program will provide a strong overview of the immune system covering the concepts of “self” versus “non-self”, innate and adaptive immunity, the role of the hematopoietic stem cell, and B and T-lymphocyte function. Additionally, the major histocompatibility system and HLA antigens will be reviewed.

Immunotherapy
Presented by Susan Randolph, MSN, RN, PNP, Director, Transplant and Cardiology Services, Coram, Inc.

Immunosuppression is often considered the “double-edged sword” of transplantation. It is an essential therapy to prevent and treat rejection in solid organ transplant recipients as well as prevent and treat graft-versus-host disease in blood or marrow transplant patients. This program will review the available therapies, their potential adverse effects, and their most common uses in the transplant population.

Cystic Fibrosis
Presented by guest speaker Linda Haggerty McBride MS, RN, co-editor of the nursing textbooks Nursing Care of the Transplant Recipient and Homecare Management of the Blood Cell Transplant Recipient

Cystic Fibrosis is the most common diagnosis leading to lung transplantation in the pediatric population. This program reviews the disease, clinical manifestations, and causes of and treatment of pulmonary exacerbations. Preventative care measures as well as the role of transplantation will be covered.

IVIG Use in Transplantation
Presented by guest speaker Linda Haggerty McBride MS, RN, co-editor of the nursing textbooks Nursing Care of the Transplant Recipient and Homecare Management of the Blood Cell Transplant Recipient

Intravenous and subcutaneous immune globulins are therapies employed in a variety of patient management settings. This program will review the multiple uses of immune globulin in both the solid organ as well as the blood/marrow transplant settings. In addition, dosing protocols related to transplant patient management will be outlined.
